“$2 million was the amount carted away by the robbers during the bullion van robbery,”- police give full report on Asaba robbery

Recall the gang of armed robbers weeks ago who intercepted a bullion van and carted away billions of naira at the ever busy Coca junction in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The incident which occurred, according an eyes witness, as at about 12:20 pm , saw the robbers with a green Toyota sciana, shooting sporadically.

It was gathered that the hoodlums attacked the bullion van and engaged policemen escorting the van in a gun duel, before allegedly diverting the bullion van.

An eyewitness account stated that the bandits opened fire on the policemen, held the van carrying money to a standstill while the policemen allegedly abandoned the driver and took to their heels for safety.

“I was at the junction waiting to enter keke when I heard the shooting everywhere and people started running for their dear life, so I ran and where I was, I saw a bullion van driver close to the filling station at the junction while the driver opened door and ran away.”

Although, information as to who drove the bullion van of one of the new generational bank into Igbuzor road against traffic was still sketchy, our source noted that the driver was seen outside the bullion van.

“I was there when the incidence happened. It was about 12:20pm before I and others ran for safety. All we were hearing are the gun shots renting the air. I saw someone who looks like the driver outside the van”,

our source who pleaded for anonymity said.

It was alleged that before the police could mobilize back to the scene, the hoodlums have successfully off-loaded the van of undisclosed sum of monies as sources alleged that the door of the bullion van was seen to have been vandalized.

Another eyes witness whose bullet pierce his car was jubilating and rejoicing as he bullet could not get to him.

“Today my Christmas started, i stood closely to the position where the bullet pierce my car, few minutes i left the position bullet pierce. I would be a dead man by now”

eyes witness said.

At press time, our correspondent gathered that the police were able to recover the empty bullion van but could not ascertain whether any of them has been arrested.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta State Command DSP Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the incident, saying

” it is a connived work, we are still investigating.”

A senior Special Anti Robbery Squad official in the state police command, who spoke to Sahara Reporters under anonymity, confirmed that the bank officials gave the figure of $2 million as the cash carted away by the bandits during the operation while the Nigerian currency in several bags was left untouched.

“One Mr. Ikechulwu, head of operations, one Mr. Athanasius, the cash movement officer and a lady manager came to the command and met with the commissioner of police and other senior officers of the command and told us that the sum of $2 million was the amount carted away by the robbers during the bullion van robbery,”

said the police source.

“As at this money no arrest has been made but I can tell you that some of the bank officials and the team of policemen who served as escort to the bullion van on the day of the robbery have been quizzed several times at the state police command. Though, we are suspecting a well coordinated internal connivance in the robbery. But I can assure you that in no distance time the robbers will be arrested.”

the officer added.
